Get this from a library. The theatre in French Canada (). [Jean Hamelin]. Theatre was banned in French Canada by the Catholic clergy inbut after Canada became British intheatrical activity begun to flourish, foremost among the British garrisons and within amateur theatre.

Antoine Foucher (), of Terrebonne (father of Louis-Charles Foucher), was the owner of the first Francophone theatre in Canada. Little Theatre Movement or la petite scène has now become a generic term for the amateur or nonprofessional "community" theatre in Canada.

Originally, however, it referred to an international reform movement protesting against the crass, mass-produced, professional fare seen around the turn of the century. As a bilingual nation, Canada has a long history of both English and French-Canadian literary talent.

From the earliest iterations of French-Canadian writing — with bilingual newspapers in Québec, and Michel Bibaud’s seminal Histoire du Canada published in — Theatre in French Canada writers have been proving their literary chops for centuries.
